This novel opens with the 'familiar portrait of an America brought to the edge of extinction by nuclear war. An itinerant storyteller, Gordon Krantz, finds an old postman's uniform and bag and starts traveling across country, taking people's letters to loved ones and telling tales of a country on the road to recovery. Eventually he becomes a major force for that recovery, as the hope he gives the people rallies them.
